Plagiocephaly Prevention
Plagiocephaly, also known as flat head syndrome, is a condition in which the back of a baby’s head flattens due to spending too much time lying on one side.
There are a number of things that parents can do to help prevent plagiocephaly, including:
- Always sleeping the baby on their back.
- Frequently varying the baby’s head position in their cot.
- Ensuring that the baby is talked to, offered toys, and fed from both sides.
- Varying the baby’s head positions when they are awake.
- Commencing tummy time from birth.
- Including side lying as part of the child’s play routine.
- Varying carry and cuddling positions.
- Ensuring the baby spends some time each day in supported sitting.
