Thermodynamic Ship Mnemonic
This text describes a mnemonic device for remembering the total differentials of the thermodynamic functions U, H, A, and G. The mnemonic device is called the “thermodynamic ship” and it consists of a cube with the four thermodynamic functions at the corners. The sides of the cube are labeled with the thermodynamic variables S, p, V, and T. The total differentials of the thermodynamic functions can be derived by multiplying the variables on opposite corners of the cube and adding a negative sign if the variable is in the negative column of the table.
Here are some questions and answers about the thermodynamic ship mnemonic:
- What is the thermodynamic ship mnemonic?
- How can it be used to remember the total differentials of the thermodynamic functions U, H, A, and G?
- What are the signs of the terms in the total differentials of the thermodynamic functions?
