Daedoug was a layman who sought the teaching of Master Nan Jun. For three years, he served the old master faithfully, but Master Nan Jun did not teach him anything. Daedoug became angry and resentful, and he finally asked the master why he had been working like a slave for three years without learning anything.
The master replied, “I did not teach you anything because I wanted you to learn through experience. I wanted you to see that even the most enlightened masters are still human beings who are subject to the same limitations as everyone else.”
Daedoug was eventually able to see the truth of the master’s words, and he achieved enlightenment.
