Portuguese 18th Century Clay Nativity Scene

A Portuguese 18th century clay Nativity Scene (Presépio) from the Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, in Lamego, is a rare and precious example of Portuguese clay sculpture from the period.

The Presépio comprises more than 60 individual polychrome clay figurines, all measuring between 8 and 15 cm in height, placed in a decorative setting with appropriate accoutrements and paraphernalia. The main figures are depicted in costumes with rich decorative details. These figurines are decorated in a similar manner to wooden polychrome sculptures of the same period. Artistic techniques including gilding and glazing are used to imitate materials such as lace or brocade; while actual materials such as glass eyes, sequins, silver halos are used to embellish the figures. The Presépio is contained within a polychromed wooden structure – a reliquary.

The Nativity Scene is a beautiful and intricate work of art that captures the scene of the Nativity in a unique and creative way. It is a rare and precious example of Portuguese clay sculpture from the 18th century.
