Appendix 1.1: Question Wording for Table 1.1

This appendix provides the question wording for the seven survey questions that were used to create the democratic support index in Table 1.1.

• Having a democratic political system
• Having a strong leader who does not have to bother with parliament and elections
• Having the army rule
• In democracy, the economic system runs badly
• Democracies aren’t good at maintaining order
• Democracies are indecisive and have too much quibbling
• Democracy may have problems but it’s better than any other form of government

The other questions in the table are about the respondent’s views on owner-run businesses, state-run businesses, government responsibility for individual welfare, abortion, homosexuality, ethnic diversity, and having a neighbor of a different religion.
